How to get brand, then legal approval

With the Brand and legal preset, brand approves the design first and legal approves it for automation second. Only then can automation render it.

Some teams need two yes answers before an automation can use a template: brand checks how it looks, then legal checks what it says. The Brand and legal preset puts both reviews in a row, with a stop in between.

Approval flows are available on Scale and Enterprise plans.

Design approved is not automation approved#

StageWhat it meansAutomation
Brand reviewWaiting for brand to approve or request changesBlocked
Design approvedBrand approved the design. Legal hasn't looked at it yetBlocked
Legal reviewWaiting for legal to approve or request changesBlocked
Automation approvedLegal approved it. Your automations can render itImage, PDF, video

A template in Design approved is approved as a design only. Your team can view it in the studio, but automation can't render it yet.

Set up the flow#

  1. 1

Create the flow from the Brand and legal preset

Follow how to set up your first approval flow and pick Brand and legal.

  2. 2

Give brand Approve access in Brand review

On the Access tab, click Add people and pick your brand approver. Set Can to Approve and In to Brand review.

  3. 3

Give legal Approve access in Legal review

Add your legal approver the same way, with In set to Legal review. Then click Save access.

Each row reads as a sentence, like "Maya can approve or request changes in 'Brand review'." Brand can't approve in Legal review, and legal can't approve in Brand review.

Take a template through both reviews#

  1. 1

    Submit it for review

On a card in Draft, click Submit for review. It moves to Brand review and brand gets a "Review needed" email.

  2. 2

    Brand approves

Brand clicks Approve on the card, then Approve in the dialog. The template moves to Design approved by itself.

  3. 3

    Send it to legal

Open the card menu, pick Move to and choose Legal review. Any team member who can move templates can do this.

  4. 4

    Legal approves

Legal clicks Approve, and can add field limits in the same dialog. The template moves to Automation approved.

From then on, automation renders it. Send any render that was blocked again: nothing was queued.

Field limits#

Legal review lets approvers add field limits in the Approve dialog: a Max length for a text field, Can't be changed for a field, and Allowed image hosts for image URLs. A render that goes past a limit is blocked with "This render goes past the field limits set when the template was approved", and the field it broke.

Common problems#

You seeWhy, and what to do
Legal review isn't in Move toLegal review only takes templates from Design approved. Brand has to approve first.
"You're not an approver in the 'Legal review' stage."Your Approve access covers another stage. Ask an owner or admin to change it on the Access tab.
Legal requested changes and the template is back in DraftEarlier approvals won't count when it's submitted again, so brand approves it again too.
The template is urgent and legal is awayOwners and admins can use Move without approval in the card menu. It asks for a reason and admins get notified.
